  1. Hades Lord of the Dead

    Alienware 17 Series
    http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-17/pd.aspx

I'm looking at the one on the far right $2,200 with Windows 7.

    Alienware 18 Series
    http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-18/pd.aspx

I'm looking at the middle one $2,300 with Windows 7.

    Processors:
    i7-4710MQ up to i7-4910MQ processor

    Video Cards
Nvidia 860m GTX (x2) for 18 inch or straight Radeon R9 M290X (4 gig) for the 17 inch.

    Thoughts

    1. I don't like 18 inch laptops, and SLI video cards are probably overkill
    2. I think the base processors offered on each system are ok.
    3. The Radeon R9 M290X , per GPU Boss, outperforms the Nvidia 860 period.
    4. The Nvidia 880's are too overpriced to be worth getting
    5. I plan to buy in July or August, and the life cycle of this is 2.5 to 3 years.
    6. I am totally out of the desktop scene so gaming laptop is my thing.
    7. I am only going to purchase one of the Alienware's linked above.

Any particular reason you`re not considering the competition? ASUS makes a great gaming notebook, which last I checked was considerably cheaper.

  3. Glisseal Lord

I have 2 alienware desktops atm one is 4 years old the other is 2yrs old, both have nvidia cards in them.....they both run great! I had 2 xps machines from Dell before they bought AW with raedons in them......Aoc gave me hell on these machines and I could not play.

  4. Hades Lord of the Dead

I ended up getting this. I have extra copies for AV/Firewall and Office to use, and I hate Windows 8 so I switched to Win 7.

    Gratz!

    Very nice, Hades.

We have a silver XPS laptop that's a few years old now - that we paid a premium for.

It still can play anything we want, though all it's mainly used for is sitting on the kitchen bar for Shaylynne to spend money @ Amazon with =p

What ya pay for that Alienware behemoth?

  7. Hades Lord of the Dead

An Alienware rig usually sets me up for 3 years at a time. I splurged on the video card, and a CPU upgrade beyond the base package wasn't worth the extra $500.

I used to buy XPS's eclusively, but too often I'd have to go in and upgrade certain pieces or find out that Dell skimped somewhere. With the Alienware I'm getting everything I need up front, the parts and hardware are not 3rd tier, and the SSD makes up for the HD RPM. I also have a $6,000 line of credit with Dell and 0% interest for 12 months so I can buy a rig and pay it off in a few months rather than shelling out all at once.

So, come August I'll be ready to get back into MMO's.

Very nice, we have a dell business credit account too - 2 laptops and 3-4 24"+ ultrasharps = win

I've probably never actually bought anything for our business there, but I definitely have used it a few times when there's a good deal on something. All with little to no interest if paid off in 12 months.

So hurry on down to crazy Sanjos and buy one today!

Also - I bet Archeage would play reaaaaly nice on that new rig :)

  9. Hades Lord of the Dead

Maybe it would but I would need an account, and I'm not paying $150.00 for it..p

    Great.... Commence the Alienware jokes!

  12. Leshil Warlord

Long as it gets 3-4 years, you'll get your money's worth.

  13. Hades Lord of the Dead

Yeah. I never spend more than $2,500 on any rig, but I make sure the hardware will last 2-3 years for gaming performance.

  14. Gaunsaku Chill Dude

Jesus, $2500? These days I think you could go $1500 and still be pretty top of the line, no?

  15. Hades Lord of the Dead

Gaun, your lack of knowledge never ceases to amaze.

Assume you have a keyboard and mouse and software

Total = $1907, which is still under $2k and is fairly top-line IMO. Could drop down the video card a gen and save another $250 and save again if you got 24" instead of 27" monitor.

Or if you really really want a laptop, the Sager NP9377 can be configured better than the alienware with Nvidia SLI for $2044.

Just trying to save you money because the next time there's a LotD meetup you're buying everyone 30 year old scotch (or did you miss that RCoD vote?) :D

There's always better alternatives to Alienware. I would have tried to sell Hades harder in his previous thread but it appears he was dead set on an overpriced brand that became a shadow of it's former self when Dell bought them (imo).

  18. Valor Buffalo Rancher

I spend $900 dollars every 3 years on a desktop that will play 95% of any ONLINE game on high settings flawlessly.

    Can't imagine dropping $2500... I wish... but I can't.

You can't possible have cornered the dick sucking market in Austin that fast, Valor. Work on your entrepreneurial skills until all of Congress Street knows your name.

Your knowledge of this city while not residing here is uncanny to say the least.
